DIY Body Oil: A workshop with Linear Beauty
What will you use your body oil for?
This body oil can be used in many different ways, so think about what you want to use yours for.
Here are some suggestions:
A daily body oil to replace your lotion
A multipurpose oil you use as a cleansing oil, hair oil, and face oil
Something really rich and nourishing that you save just for nighttime
Just an oil that smells great
Begin with your carrier oils:
Go over your worksheet and mark the carrier oils you may be interested in. Test how they feel and smell on your skin by putting a drop on your forearm. Make note of how dry or greasy they feel. Some oils will have a much stronger smell than others, so keep that in mind for when you choose your essential oils as it will affect the scent.
Get started:
Choose which oils you are going to use and write down their percentages
Convert your percentages into ml using the chart on your worksheet
Pour the chosen amount of each oil into your beaker
Remember that 1 full dropper = 1 ml
Once you are finished, your beaker should be filled to the 60ml mark (on the right side)
Smell your essential oils:
Gently wave the essential oil bottles a few inches under your nose. You can group them together to see how a few will smell together. Do not apply undiluted essential oils on your skin. There are bowls of coffee at the tables, these are to help reset your nose after smelling a lot of scents.
Add essential oils to carrier oils:
Start at a 0.5% dilution. This would be 6 drops total. You can always add more later. Be careful when dispensing high viscosity essential oils (i.e grapefruit, lemon) as these oils will come out very quickly, and do not shake bottles to speed up low viscosity oils (i.e vetiver). Write down how many drops you end up actually using, since you may use more than intended.
Adjust the scent to your liking by adding more essential oils if you want it to smell stronger, or more like a certain oil. Try not to exceed a 2% dilution, 24 drops total.
Finishing:
Add 6 drops of vitamin E. This is to help extend the shelf life of your oil by keeping your oils from oxidating too quickly.
Stir your oil throughly, then pour into your 2 oz bottle using the funnel provided.
Choose a closure:
There is a dropper and a pump option to choose from. With a dropper you can choose a more precise amount to dispense, where as the pump is always going to dispense the same amount. If you are not used to using droppers or are more prone to knocking over your skincare bottles, choose a pump to be safe.
Label your creation:
Give your oil a name or list the ingredients you used. And you’re done!
Remember, this is more of an art than an exact science. The percentages are there to guide you, but since we’re not using scales, measurements won’t be exact. The main thing to be careful with is essential oils—they’re very concentrated and can cause skin irritation if not diluted properly. I recommend no more than 2% for a body oil, and 1% if you’re planning to use it mostly on your face. Always start with less, then adjust if you’d like a stronger scent.
Ways to use your oil:
Body: Apply oil to damp skin just out of the shower.
Face: Apply 3-5 drops to clean, damp skin from a toning mist or hydrosol.
Hair: As a finishing oil, apply a small amount to ends of hair after styling. As a scalp oil, massage a generous amount into scalp before washing.
Cleansing Oil: On dry skin, use a full dropper or 8-10 pumps of oil and massage into skin for 1 minute. Take a warm, damp washcloth and wipe oil off of skin. Rinse washcloth and repeat as needed. You can follow up with a water based cleanser or continue with toning mist, moisturizer, and face oil.
